Notre Dame jumped on Gilroy High’s girls soccer team early in
Tuesday’s Tri-County Athletic League match at Monterey Peninsula
College, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Annika Rose in the 10th
minute.
Trailing for the first time in a league game all season, the
Mustangs also found themselves in danger of losing their first TCAL
contest. But, while no longer flawless, Gilroy did manage to stay
undefeated through Ariana Carrillo scoring an equalizer 50 minutes
after Rose’s goal to end the match tied 1-1.
MONTEREY – Notre Dame jumped on Gilroy High’s girls soccer team early in Tuesday’s Tri-County Athletic League match at Monterey Peninsula College, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Annika Rose in the 10th minute.
Trailing for the first time in a league game all season, the Mustangs also found themselves in danger of losing their first TCAL contest. But, while no longer flawless, Gilroy did manage to stay undefeated through Ariana Carrillo scoring an equalizer 50 minutes after Rose’s goal to end the match tied 1-1.
Midfielder Indra Garcia assisted Carrillo to give Gilroy (11-2-4 overall, 8-0-1) its fourth draw of the season. Notre Dame (7-8-4, 4-1-4) took over second place in league with the tie.
“The lackluster result was really my fault,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “I haven’t done a good job focusing the girls.”
Despite the disappointment of not being able to go a perfect 12-0 in league this season, the draw does little to damage Gilroy’s chances of winning a third straight TCAL title. The Mustangs have three games remaining, with an upcoming home match against Salinas at 6 p.m. on Friday. Gilroy won the two squads’ last meeting 2-0 on Jan. 14.
“It’s OK,” Hernandez said. “We have three more league games and we’ll go back to work.”

Gilroy lost its TCAL contest against visiting Palma 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime following a goal by Daniel Johnsen, the Mustangs (10-5-5 overall, 3-4-2 TCAL) allowed two more scores to lose its second game in a row by three-goal shutout.
Palma (12-2-2, 6-1-2) stayed in second place in league, while Gilroy currently sits in fourth.
