Tee it high and let it fly.
Tee it high and let it fly.
How many times have you heard that motto when it comes to hitting a golf ball. The motto is true, sometimes but not all the time. Teeing it high is a good idea when you are hitting your tee shot with a driver and driver only.
Today’s age of super big headed drivers make it a must to tee the ball 1-2″ off the ground. This is necessary because the driver strikes the ball on the slight upswing and you need those couple of inches to allow the club to start travelling upwards to hit the ball without striking the ground.
But what about the rest of the clubs?
When teeing off with those just simulate that you have a perfect lie in the fairway and swing the same way.
With fairway woods, tee the ball 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the ground an simply sweep the ball of the tee. Virtually striking the ball at the precise bottom of the swing. With your irons only tee the ball up a mere 1/4 inch. This allows you to still strike the ball on the downswing, take your divot after impact and strike the ball solid in the center of the clubface I often see players teeing an iron 1″ above the ground.
The problem with this is that if you make a good swing you will make contact with the ball very high on the clubface. This will result in a weak hit that goes only about 70 percent of normal yardage. So remember, the shorter the club the lower the tee height.
When all else fails, take a lesson, you’ll be surprised how much we can help.
