Joanne Lo’s 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3-singles broke a 3-3 tie with Everett Alvarez, providing the finishing touches on a Gilroy High girls varsity tennis team 4-3 win in Tri-County Athletic League action Tuesday in Salinas.
“(It was) a great win for Joanne and her confidence,” head coach Jami Reynolds said.
Lo’s straight sets nod came after all the other matches had been decided.
“This gives everyone hope that we can win, which lifted everyone’s spirits,” Reynolds said. “This is the match I was waiting for. The girls really played so much smarter and I was so full of pride that they came out not only with the win, but everyone in the lineup played so well.”
Shaking off a late start due to some light rain, the Mustangs swept the doubles portion of the match.
Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 outcome at No. 1-doubles.
“Melanie and Elaina are always fun to watch, but they were on fire yesterday and were hitting amazing winners left and right,” Reynolds boasted of her most experienced players.
No. 2-doubles tandem, Lindsay Holt and Sami Holder, completed a straight sets win over Yvonne Casillas and Ann Legaspi, 6-3, 6-4, using a calculated and fundamentally sound approach to the match.
Megan Meazell and Alejandra Pacheco beat Jessica Vo and Jessica Wong, 6-3, 7-5, for the duo’s first victory of the season.
“I was very proud of them as they have been working hard and it is finally paying off for them by playing smarter and making less errors,” Reynolds said.
The Mustangs host North Salinas at Gilroy on Thursday at 4 p.m.
