Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez were locked in the
afternoon’s must intriguing matchup against Erin Glasspool and Alex
Triulo as rival San Benito made its way to Gilroy on Thursday.
GILROY – You could see it in their body language. Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez wanted to win.
The seniors, who make up the No. 1-doubles duo on the Gilroy High girls varsity tennis team, were locked in the afternoon’s must intriguing matchup against Erin Glasspool and Alex Triulo as rival San Benito made its way to Gilroy on Thursday.
“They are fighters. They are really competitive,” GHS head coach Jami Reynolds said as she watched Vasquez place a solid forehand winner down the right line.
“That’s what she’s capable of,” Reynolds added.
Morelos and Vasquez nearly salvaged a team point but eventually succumbed to Glasspool and Triulo in a nail-biting 7-5, 7-6 second-set tiebreaker loss.
The Balers swept the Tri-County Athletic League match 7-0.
“There is potential there,” Reynolds said of her young Mustangs. “This is a tough league, but we have a chance. It’s not like we are getting killed. I see an opening and we will be alright.”
Hayley Barker defeated Jennifer Kwong 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. After a slow start, Kwong found success with her serve and made things interesting in the second set.
Kristina Slavich knocked off Satthea Khay in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2-singles, while Audrey Marshall beat Joanne Lo and Kelly Slavich defeated Amiti Munshi, to pick up points at No. 3- and No. 4-singles, respectively.
Olivia Diaz and Alex Garcia won their decision over Mustangs Lindsey Holt and Sami Holder, 6-2, 6-4. Gilroy’s No. 3-doubles pairing of Alejandra Pacheco and Megan Meazell gave Katherine Starks-Jones and Amanda Alvarez fits but fell short, 7-5, 6-4.
