Dear Editor:

The Rule-Willey House, located at 140 Fifth St., is a dedicated city park site in Gilroy’s Historic Downtown District. It is on the threshold of being transformed into the appealing showpiece planned for in 1996 thanks to the many supporters of the city council’s approval to landscape. Rest assured, this project was well worth the long wait. As the past garden of yesterday flows into the present plans, the house will become the gracious community social spot it once was.

Even in a time of severe city budget cutbacks, we can thank Cathy Mirelez, Tom Howard, Lucy Solorzano and Susan Voss who, through innovative and dedicated professional management, have kept it profitable by providing classroom space for thousands of children and adults, government and private meetings, social events, conferences and community exhibitions. With the new landscaping the capacity size will double, and we can look forward to having a new venue in town for many private and community events.

Again, thank you to all the Rule-Willey Cultural Center supporters including the Gilroy Historical Society, Arts and Culture Commission, Public Art Committee and Theater Angels Art League. You have helped to ensure the future vitality and hospitality this pleasant site will provide for all Gilroy residents.

There are countless people who have benefited from it in the past and, with the restoration of the gardens, it will become a wonderful and unique venue for many more to enjoy.

Arline Silva, Gilroy
