We’re lucky enough to have a veteran access producer in our community. Val Jeffery produces a show for seniors entitled “The Better Part” along with a collective of seniors from the Silicon Valley.

“The Better Part” has been flourishing at Cupertino Community TV and is now continuing their great work through Mountain View Community Television. Their program title was inspired by the Robert Browning quote, “Grow old with me the best is yet to come.”

The Better Part has reached a milestone that few access programs do. They celebrated their twentieth anniversary this past week, and certainly deserve kudos for their dedication in producing this informative and entertaining magazine program.

Val has only worked on the program for a couple of years, but her addition to the production crew has been significant. She works on editing the videos on imovie, a user-friendly digital editing software that comes with apple computers. Two episodes of The Better Part were nominated as finalists for WAVE Awards, with one episode winning first place. The finalist program featured Michael Andres, a local school teacher who produced a short film called Kidschool that screened at the San Jose Film Festival. Val won for her episode entitled Earthquake in El Salvador, featuring two seniors who helped rebuild a village in El Salvador after a devastating earthquake.

This week on Public Access Channel 20, The Better Part features Frank Olson from Silicon Valley SCORE, which stands for the Service Core of Retired Executives. SCORE offers counseling for individuals who are looking to start their own business. Professionals who have a wealth of information to share with entrepreneurs are available via email, phone, or face-to-face appointments. Host Dennis Palsgaard explores the benefits of SCORE, as well as the services they offer.

While the program is produced by and for seniors in the Cupertino area, the information shared can be of great benefit to seniors in our community as well. The Better Part airs on Channel 20 this Sunday at 7pm, Monday at 11am, and Wednesday at 4pm.

A hearty congratulations to Val Jeffery and the entire crew of The Better Part for their commitment to getting the word out to seniors via community TV channels!
