With triple-digit temperatures looming for the rest of the week, the city’s designated “cooling center” is on standby, according to the fire department.

The Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., is the city’s official refresher when the National Weather Service issues heat warnings, usually at about 102 degrees, said Roy Shackel, a captain with the Gilroy Fire Department Captain and an assistant coordinator with the city’s Office of Emergency Services.

“The senior center is in stand-by mode right now, and if we go from a watch, which we’re in, to a warning, then we’ll open it up,” Shackel said. Highs throughout the week are expected to exceed 102 degrees.

“The warming trend noted on Monday will only increase on Tuesday. But even warmer temperatures are forecast on Wednesday and Thursday,” read a heat warning advisory on the service’s Web site. While the broiling, arid conditions could facilitate fires, the service reported that there were no lightning warnings throughout the week.

“We might get some cumulus (cloud) build-up, but there’s no lightning forecasted at this point,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Larry Smith.

For those uninterested in spending their afternoons sweating in the senior center, Platinum Theaters on Monterey Roadº opens its doors at 9:15 a.m. during the week. And Cold Stone Creamery, 890 Renz Lane in Pacheco Pass Plaza, has even introduced four new flavors to coincide with the hot weather.

“Chocolate cake batter, cookie batter, blueberry muffin and tart and tangy yogurt – we just got those in, and we’ve been getting busier and stuff because of the heat,” said Manager Melissa Nuanes. “And we got our a-c fixed, so everybody’s coming in and hanging out now.”
