Just for a moment, think about what would be easier to do. Hit a ball with a four foot long 2 x 4 that is one straight length of wood, or hit it with a 2 x 4 that hinges in the middle? I think the answer is obvious that it would be much easier to hit the ball with the straight 2 x 4.

The same concept should be applied to your left arm. Too many players start their backswing with a straight left arm, but then slowly it starts to bend midway through the backswing so that it is at almost a 90 degree angle at the top. Now is where the tough part comes. You must somehow try to swing down and straighten that arm at the precise moment that you hit the ball.

It’s a feat that is close to impossible to do with any consistency.

To be consistent, try to keep your left arm as straight as you can on the backswing. Even if this means shortening up your backswing. It is much better to have a shorter swing with a straight left arm than a long backswing with a bent left arm. This will make it easier to keep the arm straight as you come into the hitting area. Your consistency will improve and so will your shots.
