Digital cameras are becoming increasingly popular and less expensive as technology continues to improve. As a result, they are everywhere now, even in cell phones.

But digital cameras aren’t just for capturing your favorite memories. They can also be used in that home improvement project. They can be used to document damage for an insurance company or to help you remember how a complicated device comes apart or goes back together.

Because they don’t require film, there is no reason to worry about conserving shots. You can snap away to your heart’s content, recording even the most minor project details.

With a digital camera, you can chronicle step by step what you do. Now you no longer have to worry about having extra pieces left over after you replace the sink or ceiling fan.

After each step, take a picture of what you have to remind yourself of where it goes. You can later view the images using your camera or computer. The images should be in order, so you will be able to scroll back through them.

In order not to get them confused, take pictures of the instructions while pointing to the individual step in the instructions that corresponds with what you just did.

You might want to take a picture of all the disassembled pieces together in order of the way they go back.

With a little extra time and work, you should be able to develop the perfect system that works for you.

Do you have a home improvement question or a suggestion for something that has worked for you? If so, we’d love to hear it. The home improvement tip runs on Wednesdays. Send your questions and comments to nm*****@**********rs.com or call (408) 842-6400 and ask for Nathan Mixter.
