A furious last-week push was not quite enough for Dustin Wolf and the Calgary Flames to catch either the Minnesota Wild or the St. Louis Blues for the final West playoff spot.
Down the stretch, Calgary coach Ryan Huska chose Wolf as his goalie in nearly every game. The Gilroy native was in the net for 11 of the last 12 games through and including April 15.
On the next day, he celebrated his 24th birthday; but results from Tuesday had St. Louis blowing out Utah and Minnesota rallying past Anaheim. Those developments kept Calgary just out of the playoff pack, although the Flames charged from a 3-1 deficit to upset the powerful Vegas Golden Knights 5-4 in their home finale.
During the Sports Net Canada broadcast, commentators Ryan Leslie, Cory Sarich and Eric Francis discussed who would be the team’s MVP this year. They unanimously named Wolf.
Sarich commented after the first period when the playoff chase was still alive, “Dustin Wolf is the reason this game matters. Here we are in Game 81. It matters because Dustin Wolf has been so brilliant.”
Julian McKenzie of The Athletic recently wrote a column detailing each NHL team’s MVP.
For Calgary, McKenzie said, “If it wasn’t for Wolf, Calgary would be much further down the standings. Wolf carried one of the NHL’s lowest-scoring teams virtually every game he played for the Flames this season. Wolf had only 11 appearances out of 50 where his team scored four goals or more. He’s the Flames’ undisputed MVP.”
Writers Dom Luszczyszyn and Sean Gentille wrote that only six goalies in the league have saved more “goals above expected.”
