Brian Reader had a remarkable season in leading Palma to the Tri-County Athletic League championship.
The senior quarterback was honored for his success by being named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Reader completed 116 of 172 passes for 1,866 yards and 14 touchdowns, all league highs.
Other top awards went to Johnny Sanchez of San Benito, Defensive Player of the Year, and Jason Taylor of Alisal, Offensive Player of the Year. Sanchez finished as the Haybalers all-time leading tackler and had 113 his senior season. Taylor was second in the league in rushing with 1,077 yards. His 7.5 average gain was tops among runners with more than 40 carries.
Three Gilroy players were first-team selections. Senior Paul Gonzales, who finished as the leading TCAL rusher with 1,120 yards, was selected at running back. Junior Filemon Bobadilla was selected as an offensive lineman. Senior Frank Subia was selected at defensive back.
GHS second-teamers were Marshad Johnson, a wide receiver who was tied for second most receptions with 26; Jake Cantu and Tyler Maslanka, linebackers; Andres Barragan, defensive line; and Vince Giacalone, defensive back.
Mustangs selected for honorable mention were Marc Vegas, Hunter Collins, Danny Contreras and Sebastian Muro. Edward Valdez was cited for Sportsmanship.
Jeff Davis of Palma was chosen as Lineman of the Year; Chad Davis of Palma and Daniel Alejo of Alisal were named Juniors of the Year; and Sam Doty of Hollister was selected as Sophomore of the Year.
