The Christopher High field hockey team improved to 2-0 in the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 2-0 road victory over Santa Catalina on Thursday.
The Cougars received goals from Raquel Roberts and Abby Smith. Roberts also assisted on Smith’s goal.
CHS had just one game this week due to a scheduling conflict with York that caused Tuesday’s contest to be postponed to a later date.
The Cougars face their toughest challenge of the young season when they host defending league champion North Salinas on Monday. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. at CHS.
CHS volleyball
The CHS girls volleyball team didn’t wait long to start a new winning streak, sweeping Monterey on the road 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 to pull even in the Monterey Bay League on Thursday night.
The straight sets victory comes on the heels of the Cougars (9-6 overall, 1-1 MBL) first loss in seven matches Tuesday against Monte Vista Christian.
Merrett Brown had nine kills and two aces, Claudia Ferreira had five kills, Hanna Tabron three kills and three blocks, Alex Gerberick hoisted 22 assists and contributed three aces, and Paulina Vo-Griffin had eight digs.
“The girls played very well tonight. Olivia Tabron and Emily Doughty both got some playing time at left side. They really stepped up and took advantage of their opportunity,” head coach Tom Schatz said. “I moved Shelly Toves to left back, which worked out great.”

Head coach Paul Wells described Shannon McAvoy’s nine-goal outburst “a breakout performance” but the Christopher High girls water polo team fell short in an offensive shootout 18-12 against Notre Dame in Salinas on Thursday.
The Cougars trailed by five goals entering the final period and, with the stout defensive of Kaitlin Ramirez at the 2-meter position, had their sights set on the Spirits. However, CHS was unable to close the gap by the final buzzer.
Julia Graham contributed two goals and freshman Hannah Marquez had one.
CHS boys water polo
The Christopher High boys water polo team encountered a disciplined San Benito squad and, despite 13 saves in cage by Connor McConkie, teh Cougars suffered a 12-4 loss to the Balers in Hollister.
Head coach Paul Wells said his Cougars were “pressed by the Hollister defense on every possession and had trouble with the team speed of the Balers on offense.”
Gabriel Lopez and Evan Shapiro each had one goal while Brennan Wilson had a pair of tallies for the Cougars.
GHS tennis
Despite a comeback victory in the No. 1 doubles match, the Gilroy High girls tennis team lost a close 4-3 decision to Monte Vista Christian on Thursday.
Jessica Martin and Janki Patel rallied after dropping the first set 6-1, claiming the second set 7-6 (7-5) and subsequently the third-set tiebreaker 10-8.
GHS begins league play Tuesday at Watsonville High.

Salinas High played ungracious host Thursday, dispatching the Gilroy High girls water polo team 10-4.
The Mustangs will try for their first win of the season this weekend as participants in the two-day Watsonville Tournament.

In an anticipated rematch with Harbor, which dealt the Gilroy High boys water polo team a 12-11 loss last weekend, the Pirates had the Mustangs number once more, delivering a 14-8 defeat Thursday night.
