Tomasina “Cathy” Buyak passed away peacefully at her home in Reno, Nev., with her loving family at her side on Thursday, March 13. Cathy fought a gallant and graceful battle against cancer. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1925, in Campbell to parents Blase and Catherine Talia. It was in Campbell where she met her husband, Emile George Buyak, who preceded her in death. She and her husband made Sunnyvale their home for 20 years where she raised their three children. Later she and her family moved to Gilroy, to be closer to their business, the Gilroy Foundry. After retiring in 1978, she moved to her home overlooking the delta in Bethel Island. It was there where you could find Cathy doing what she knew how to do best: entertaining and showing the kindest hospitality for her family and friends. Cathy had a passion for singing and dancing for those she loved, always knowing how to put a smile on everyone’s face.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John and Dina Buyak of Sumner, Wash.; daughter and close friend Linda Furtado and Eddie Estrado of Reno; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Barbara Buyak of Carson City, Nev.; loving sister Elizabeth Talia Garcia of Reno; loving brother and sister-in-law John and Ann Talia of Santa Clara; grandchildren Sharon Furtado, Shelley Canario and Kendra Silacci, all of Gilroy, Chardonnae Andrews and Tommy Buyak of Carson City, and John Bay and Heidi Buyak of Sumner; and 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service being held to celebrate Cathy’s life on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary, 466 North Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara.

For anyone wishing to make a gift in honor of Tomasina C. Buyak, the family requests that donations be made in Cathy’s name to the American Cancer Society.
