Gilroy – The Mustang baseball team didn’t want to leave Friday’s Tri-County Athletic League without scoring at least one run.
Gilroy (12-10, 8-6 TCAL) put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to get on the board in a 3-1 loss to Palma.
Danny Contreras reached on a ball the Chieftains’ shortstop wasn’t able to field cleanly, and Tyler Osborne added a hit. Kevin Grove hit a double in the left centerfield gap to bring in Contreras – the only extra base hit for the Mustangs. Dustin Robinson, who came in to run for Grove had to hold up at third base.
“It was nice to have that chance,” said Mustang coach Clint Wheeler. “We could have done a little better going opposite field. We had way to many fly balls.”
Palma (18-5, 11-3 TCAL) scored a run in the fifth after an error allowed a runner to score from third.
The Chieftains added two more in the sixth but left the bases loaded for the second time in the game. Jacob Dexter pitched the first five innings and Drew Andersen pitched the final two for Gilroy.
Nick Houston picked up the win the Chieftains, pitching the final 4 1/3 innings.
“Clint always does a super job of preparing them,” said Palma coach Reny Enriquez. “We deserved to lose this one. Their pitchers were around the plate. We hurt ourselves.”
Gilroy plays at North Salinas Monday before heading to Salinas Wednesday.
