LOS GATOS – Lindsey Foster took aim at the Gilroy High girls school record in the long jump, ending up a few inches short, but her leap of 17 feet, 10 inches gave her a first-place finish at the 31st Annual Top 8 Track and Field Classic in Los Gatos on Friday.
GHS head coach Jeff Myers said Foster had nearly the perfect jump with all the makings of a record-breaker, but a bit of a faulty landing in the pit caused her to come up short.
“If she had not dropped her feet during the landing phase, she could have jumped 18-5 to 18-9 if she had not dropped her feet just a little too early,” Myers said.
The GHS record of 18-2.75, held by Kelli Abruzzini, has stood since 1980.
“I’m pretty confident Lindsey will break that this season,” Myers added.
Jourdan Soares also had a good day in the high jump, posting 21-7 for fourth place.
“We have been working a lot on Lindsey and Jourdan’s approaches in the long jump, and they both had excellent patterns and consistency,” Myers said. “That was the difference between them and the rest of the field.”
Julius Travis took fifth in both the 100-meter dash (11.18) and the 200 (20.42).
The Top 8 is one of the most exclusive meets in the Central Coast Section, showcasing the top eight to 12 athletes in each event.
The Mustangs will take on undefeated San Benito in a Tri-County Athletic League dual meet Thursday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex beginning at 5:30 p.m.
