Wesley Painter, 29 of Gilroy, whose lifeless body was located in a west Morgan Hill home while police were investigating an unrelated incident, is not considered a victim of foul play, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza said.
Sheriff’s deputies were summoned to a home on Oak Valley Road, near Sheila Avenue, by the home’s resident when they responded to a call reporting shots fired in the area early Sunday morning, Cardoza said.
Deputies responded to the initial calls, which did not originate at the residence, about 3 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.
While trying to determine where the reported gunfire came from, a resident of the home on Oak Valley Road contacted deputies and told them that a man was unconscious and not breathing in the house, Cardoza said.
Painter was not a resident of the home, Cardoza said.
Deputies tried to revive Painter using C.P.R., and paramedics arrived to the home, police said.
Painter was pronounced dead at the home, according to Cardoza.
Painter did not suffer any gunshot wounds, and detectives think the death and the gunshots heard in the rural neighborhood were unrelated and coincidental.
The death is still under investigation, but Cardoza said detectives do not suspect “anything suspicious” or foul play.
“There are no suspects, and no persons of interest,” Cardoza said.
Staff at the coroner’s office release Painter’s name late Wednesday afternoon. The cause of his death has not yet been determined.
Painter’s obituary was posted to the Times’ website late Wednesday afternoon.
“Everyone that knew Wes loved his smile, his infectious laugh, his big heart and his love for his family,” the obit reads.
A memorial service is planned for 12 p.m. Friday at the Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.
