SALINAS – A slow start quickly turned into a runaway three-set sweep by the Gilroy High girls varsity volleyball team against Alisal in Salinas on Tuesday night.

After falling behind 9-2 in the first set, head coach Josh Corioso needed to send a message to his team.

“I called my first timeout and then after that we turned on our switch,” Corioso wrote via e-mail. “I pulled them aside and told them that they needed to wake up – and they did just that.”

After the pep talk, the Mustangs went on to win the set 25-15, and it was all Gilroy from then on.

The Mustangs took the next two sets 25-11 and 25-15, respectively, using a strong service game that included 14 aces.

Avrielle Walker converted 75 percent of her hits and also had five aces. Lindsey Foster, Laura Moore and Loryn Ferreria each made good on more than 50 percent of their opportunities.

The Mustangs host rival San Benito on senior night Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams played a four-set thriller in their last meeting with the Balers coming out victorious 25-21, 27-25, 25-17, 25-22.
