Parents and students were encouraged to walk to school Wednesday as part of the Gilroy Unified School District’s annual “Walk and Roll” event. District officials said they hope the event is only the beginning of a trend to have students walk and ride to school on a regular basis. Created by the Partnership for a Walkable America in 1997, this energizing event reminds everyone of the simple joys of walking and bicycling to school, the health benefits of regular daily activity, and the need for safe places to walk and bike, officials said. The event encouraged youth to walk or bicycle to school to improve health, traffic safety, educational achievement and the environment.
