– City Hall is calling on civic-minded residents to serve their
community by applying for vacancies on 11 boards and commissions.
Twenty positions will become available in December on a range of
town bodies, from the high-profile Planning Commission, which
controls zoning and development in ever-
expanding Gilroy, to lesser-known groups such as the Street
Naming Committee.
Gilroy – City Hall is calling on civic-minded residents to serve their community by applying for vacancies on 11 boards and commissions. Twenty positions will become available in December on a range of town bodies, from the high-profile Planning Commission, which controls zoning and development in ever-expanding Gilroy, to lesser-known groups such as the Street Naming Committee.
“Typically we get plenty of applications for Planning Commission,” City Clerk Rhonda Pellin said. “We have a much harder time getting people for the Arts and Culture and the Library [commissions]. We’ve also had some trouble with Building Board of Appeals (BOA) and Physically Challenged Board of Appeals.”
The Physically Challenged BOA ensures that playgrounds, sidewalks, and other city property comply with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
While the BOA’s one vacancy is open to all residents, city officials encourage applications from those with physical handicaps, or with a disabled family member.
“That way they are familiar with the types of issues involved in ADA compliance,” Pellin said. “The same thing with the Building BOA – a building background would be preferable.”
The two appeals boards require applicants to disclose basic information about property holdings to avoid conflicts of interest.
Pellin stressed that “it’s not a hugely detailed” disclosure form.
Memberships on boards and commissions generally last four years.
“It’s important because the City Council needs input from the citizens to be able to make the best decisions on behalf of the entire community, Pellin said.”

Applications are due by Dec. 9 at 5 p.m.
City Council will interview candidates Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
