The Gilroy High girls water polo team used an efficient performance to keep a flawless league record in tacked, defeating visiting Santa Catalina 14-0 on Thursday.
The Mustangs improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
GHS coasted out to a 4-0 advantage in the first period, receiving a pair of goals from Michelle Shields and one each from Francesca Comin and Lauren Rhodes.
The Mustangs continued their methodical approach with five more tallies in the second period to increase an already comfortable lead to 9-0 at the break.
Rhodes and Nicole Nelsen had a hand in the Mustangs’ three third-period goals. Rhodes beat the shot clock to put GHS up 10-0 and less than a minute later Nelsen made it 11-0 with a shot from mid-pool, catching the goalie out of position. With 1:30 remaining in the period, Nelsen hit a driving Rhodes with a spot-on pass, which was deposited into the cage.
Chelsea Hill scored two of her four goals in the final period.
Goalie Devan Lauber turned aside each shot she faced in cage to collect 11 saves in the contest.
GHS BOYS WATER POLO
Michael Shields took aim and converted a goal from 20 meters away to bring the Gilroy High boys water polo team to within two of Palma. However, the crowd-pleasing shot came with one second showing in the fourth period in a Chieftain’s 7-5 win over the Mustangs on Thursday.
Tight defensive work at both ends of the pool left the score 3-1 at halftime. Josh Kendrick tallied for the Mustangs in the first period, cutting a Chieftains lead to 2-1. Palma added one goal in the second period for the narrow halftime lead.
After a Palma goal one minute into the third period, Kendrick struck again with a bullet into the lower left-hand corner of the cage. Two straight Chieftains goals brought the score to 6-2 before Kendrick notched a hat trick with three minutes remaining in the third.
The Chieftains pushed the advantage back up to four before a pair of Shields’ goals capped the scoring.
