The Gilroy City Council will have its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers, 7351 Rosanna St. Here are some of the upcoming items on the agenda.
Weeds and refuseÂ
Staff is recommending the City Council approve a resolution that would direct the fire chief to “abate the nuisance” from weeds and accumulation of trash on a hit list of properties around the City, if the owners of the properties fail to do it themselves. Property owners who fail to take heed of the abatement notices, which will be delivered by mail, will have any fees incurred during the clean up assessed against their property taxes.Â
Elm tree replacement
The Council has the task of choosing a type of tree to replace Gilroy’s English elm trees, which will be removed from the City. After consultation with an arborist, the Parks and Recreation Committee has whittled down the options to either honey locust or shademaster locust trees. Or will the Council go out on a limb with something different? The decision will impact all future English elm tree removal from the City.Â
No payday lending or check cashing businesses in Gilroy?
Staff is recommending the City Council adopt an urgency ordinance to establish a temporary moratorium on the establishment, expansion or relocation of payday lending and check cashing businesses within the City of Gilroy. Staff is also recommending amendments to the City’s Zoning Ordinance to limit or prohibit the operation of these sorts of businesses within the City. There are six payday lenders located within the City, and business owners might have something to say about the recommendations. However, local nonprofit Coalition Against Payday Predators points to Gilroy having one of the highest ratio of lenders per capita in Santa Clara County. Can Gilroy find a balance? Or will someone get bounced?
