DEAR EDITOR:

As a reader, I was actually confused by the Dec. 19 letter written by James Brescoll. Help me out here, Mr. Brescoll.

You dramatically spoke of Paul Correa, chastising him for representing “union masters,” and NOT representing the people who live and work right here in our Gilroy community.

Now, let’s examine your quotes from the same article regarding Mr. Correa’s voiced action plan when the super Wal-Mart is approved. Help me to see what I am missing from your disapproval of Mr. Correa.

1) You quote Mr. Correa as saying, “maybe we can sit down with Wal-Mart and talk to them about having a positive impact on this community.”

2) Mr. Correa stated he would like to discuss such issues as hiring workers from Gilroy first.

3) He stated he would like to discuss Wal-Mart using local companies to do the construction work at the new site.

4) Discuss paying “livable wages” to its employees.

5) Encourage Wal-Mart to donate more to local charities.

My interpretation of the above five actions is that each is directly concerned with the workers and people of our Gilroy community. As to Mr. Correa being able to make Wal Mart capitulate to his “demands,” I say this, “Only the workers of Wal-Mart can organize and attempt to unionize.” If, and only when, the workers of Wal-Mart determine their working environment needs to change, can any change begin. Paul Correa, with his meager union campaign donation, has no control or power over this process.

Lastly, the active dialog referenced by Mr. Correa creates understanding and awareness for all parties who have a vested interest in the issues being discussed. I want to thank Paul Correa for his willingness to bring both groups to the table enabling everyone to share information and ideas, creating long-term benefits for all people of the city of Gilroy.
