– The de Saisset Museum will be hosting an exhibit from the Arts
Council Silicon Valley ArtsConnect Exhibition. The show features
masks fashioned from palm fronds, bound books made from handmade
paper using local plants and fibers, watercolor paintings, clay
reliefs and a musical CD written, recor
ded and produced by the students of ArtsConnect.
SANTA CLARA – The de Saisset Museum will be hosting an exhibit from the Arts Council Silicon Valley ArtsConnect Exhibition. The show features masks fashioned from palm fronds, bound books made from handmade paper using local plants and fibers, watercolor paintings, clay reliefs and a musical CD written, recorded and produced by the students of ArtsConnect. A sizable photomural will display students’ painted work from the side of their school building in San Martin. ArtsConnect is a program that provides art instruction to troubled teens and is a partnership between Arts Council Silicon Valley and Santa Clara County Office of Education Alternative Schools Department. The exhibition runs until Aug. 1, and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The de Saisset Museum is located at Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real. SAN JOSE – Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley will be presenting “Hallelujah Junction, Vivaldi Concerto Grosso, Frontier and Go Daddy O!” through Sunday. “Hallelujah Junction” takes its force from the score by Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Adams and the choreography of New York City Ballet’s Peter Martin. Next, a suite of rich imagery defines Lew Christensen’s last ballet as it intertwines with Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso. Then, the famous ballet, “Frontier,” by Martha Graham, is a sharp contrast with its unique style and simplicity. Finally, swing music surrounds the dancing of “Go Daddy O!” The ballet will run through Sunday at the Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd. Tickets are $22 to $68. SAN JOSE – The Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose Rising Stars will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical “Cinderella.” The pair’s score was originally made for television, with a live broadcast starring Julie Andrews in 1957. SAN JOSE – On Tuesday, there will be a Silicon Valley Business Expo and Conference targeting people with small- and medium-sized businesses with seminars and panels, a networking breakfast, a mixer and more than 150 exhibitors. SAN JOSE – The San Jose Symphonic Choir will present its “Sacred Circle of Friends” concert featuring Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass” and a cappella selections including works by Bay Area composers Henry Mollicone, Sondra Clark and Michael Kalukin. Santa Cruz – Venezuelan singer and composer Maria Marquez will perform and Kuumbwa chef Cheryl Simons will cook during the “Cookin’ at the Kuumbwa” event. Marquez was a fixture of the Bay Area jazz and world music scene before returning to Venezuela in 1992. She subsequently came back to the Bay Area, where she joined the group Wild Mango as a singer. She has also performed in Trio Amoroso with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and has released five solo albums. Marquez studied composition, arranging and film scoring for five years at the Berklee College of Music. She scored the film “three x three” with musician/producer Frank Harris and has also performed as part of Trio Altamira. Marquez will perform Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors open and dinner begins at 6 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For jazz and dinner, they’re $20.50 in advance. The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is at 320-2 Cedar St.
