Spray schedule?
“Hi Red Phone, I’m just calling about the mosquito season and I was hoping to find out who’s in charge of mosquito abatement or the prevention of mosquito breeding on the channels here in Gilroy. As you know, there are channels throughout Gilroy and I think Santa Clara County is responsible, but I’m not sure. Hopefully we can get a schedule published and tell the residents of Gilroy when the mosquito spraying will occur. Appreciate it.
Just curious and hopefully this will solve a lot of headaches down the road. Thanks for your help on this.”
Red Phone:
Basant Lal, a staffer with the county Vector Control, said they don’t just treat creeks, ponds and storm drains during the summer because mosquitos breed throughout the year. All of the water sources are treated throughout the year.
But if residents notice a problem in a specific area or around their home they can call the county Vector Control office and request treatment. The contact number is 918-4770. Be sure to leave you name, phone number, address and cross street on the message. Oh, and be sure to keep plenty of bug repellent on hand just to be safe, because mosquito season is here.
Welcome to Gilroy
“I’d like to know what happened to the Welcome to Gilroy sign when you enter on Leavesley. It’s been there for years. I know someone crashed into it or something and it was fixed, but now it’s gone. Thank you.”
Red Phone:
Dear caller, the sign was knocked down in a car accident several months ago. After some back and forth between the city and Caltrans, Red Phone has finally found out that the sign is the city’s responsibility.
“I will be referring it to maintenance and operations for repair,” City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said.
He wasn’t sure how long before the sign would go up, but at some point the Welcome to Gilroy sign will rise again, phoenix-like to greet visitors to the Garlic City.
Vines on sound walls
“Hey Red Phone, I noticed some of the new vines on the sound walls along the Santa Teresa corridor are being supported by wires attached to the walls. What is the plan for these? Add more wires as they get bigger? Or, are they the type that will eventually cling to the walls themselves?”
Red Phone:
You guessed right the first time.
“As the plant gets bigger, more wires will be added,” City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said. “That’s probably more in the 5- to 10-year timeframe. It’s part of ongoing maintenance as far as trimming the trees and keeping everything growing properly.” So there you have it caller, now if the city and contractor can get the road fixed before those vines grow to maturation.
