with a second-place finish in the youth boys’ category.
Morgan Hill – Competing against the best young triathletes in the nation, Morgan Hill’s Lance Wolfsmith earned a silver medal in at the USA Triathlon elite national championships in Bellingham, Wash. Sunday with a second-place finish in the youth boys’ category.

Wolfsmith, 13, trailed gold medalist Samuel Sutherland of The Woodlands, Texas by just 20 seconds after a 375-meter swim, 10K bike ride and 2.5K run. The local standout completed the route in 42:09.

“Lance had the biggest win of his season, or ever,” the triathlete’s father and coach Dave Wolfsmith said.

Wolfsmith trailed bronze medalist Greg Harper of Walnut Creek by more than a minute and a half after the swim, but overtook his Bay Area rival during the bike ride and transition to the run.

The local standout was gaining on leader Sutherland in the run but ran out of time.

This was Wolfsmith’s first national triathlon event.

A nationally ranked cyclist and champion cross-country runner, Wolfsmith will begin classes at Sobrato High later this month.
