When will it open?

“Hello Red Phone. I’d like to know what’s going on with the new Wal-Mart. I’m really looking forward to it and can’t wait to check it out. When will it be open? Thanks.”

The Dispatch has been on this story since day one. A recent article from Aug. 6, ‘Building seeks tenant,’ holds the information you crave.

Local Wal-Mart employees have already begun organizing and packing inventory as the retail giant prepares to move into its new store at Pacheco Pass – a 220,000-square-foot Supercenter that adds groceries to its normal list of discount offerings. And get even more excited, good caller … the new Wal-Mart Supercenter is scheduled to open in mid-September.

Great big thanks

“Hi Red Phone. I’d like to say thank you for keeping all of us well-informed on the San Martin Animal Shelter. And a great big thanks to Don Gage on a big, controversial job that was well done. Thanks a lot from your two-legged constituents and your four-legged friends. Thank you very much and have a good day.”

The Red Phone loves getting these complimentary calls and thanks you for taking the time to call in.

After threatening for two months to cut back hours from the animal shelter, county officials were able to find $121,000 to keep it open – with some pushing from County Supervisor Don Gage.

Conflict of interest?

“I’m new to the area but I was wondering … I just found out that our city councilman Roland Velasco works as an aide to Don Gage, our representative for the board of supervisors. I was wondering, isn’t that considered a conflict of interest? If you could find that out for me, I’d appreciate it. Thank you.”

This issue came up in the spring when Gage appeared before City Council to win support for a countywide $5 Vehicle License Fee. Velasco, though not a big fan of the state legislation, joined several other councilmen to help push through its endorsement. During the debate, local Republican and anti-tax crusader Mark Zappa insisted Velasco recuse himself from the vote, given his working relationship with Gage. But city attorneys said Velasco could participate in the vote since he has no personal financial stake in the matter.

In general, council members are only required to recuse themselves from decisions where financial ties could influence their decision, such as a rezoning that could affect the value of land they own.

Great article

“Hi there, I wanted to call and tell you that I really liked the article on the Gavilan church (Aug. 13). With so many negative things happening, it was really nice to see the big photo and read the article about not only the chapel, but the lovely couple who got married. It’s just unfortunate that it had to be planned so quickly because he is going off to Iraq. I wish him well and the lady too. They’re a lovely couple. Good luck. Thank you.”

Thanks for the call. The San Felipe Community Church, originally located in Hollister was taken apart by Gavilan carpentry students in 1972 and transported – board by board – to the campus where it was rebuilt. This summer, it was restored. Angie (Papetti) and Daniel McCulloch were the first to be married in the ‘new’ chapel, and the Dispatch is pleased it was able to bring the event to its readers.
