Go mustangs!

The dual meet between No. 1 GHS and No. 3 Alisal is now
scheduled for Jan. 4.
The Gilroy High varsity wrestling team’s home opener will be a doozy.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 1 in the Central Coast Section, are 1-0 in Tri-County Athletic League dual meets this season and welcome No. 3 ranked Alisal for what should be an entertaining league showdown Tuesday night inside Bob Hagen Memorial Gym.

“There are going to be some real good matches out there,” GHS head coach Greg Varela said.

A number of the prospective bouts will feature grapplers ranked in the top 10 and top five in CCS rankings provided by The California Wrestler.

GHS sophomore Leif Dominguez, runner-up at the Reno Tournament of Champions two weeks ago and seeded No. 2 in the section at 103-pounds, will see Alisal senior Johnny Alonzo, who holds down the No. 3 spot.

The 119-pound match pits Trojans’ junior Eduardo Lopez (No. 5) and GHS freshman Victor Olmos (No. 8). Returning CCS championship medalist and current No. 3-seed at 130-pounds, senior Luis Cessa, will challenge GHS freshman Nicholas Villarreal, who sits in the No. 1 slot. GHS junior Willie Fox and Arturo Morado, who are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, will square off at 135 pounds. Defending CCS champ and current No. 1 Blake Kastl will also be in action.

The match is set to begin following the junior varsity dual , which is scheduled for 5 p.m.
