Two-day CIF State Wrestling Championships underway in
Bakersfield
This is why they train.

The 2010-11 CIF State Wrestling Championships has finally arrived and seven Gilroy High grapplers are chasing the coveted light at the end of the tunnel – a state title.

A week removed from earning its ninth consecutive Central Coast Section championship, the Mustangs, who are ranked as the seventh-best team in California, are in Bakersfield and Rabobank Arena looking to improve on last season’s sixth-place showing at the state meet. Gilroy sent eight wrestlers to last year’s state meet.

Sophomore Leif Dominguez (103) and junior Blake Kastl (135) return to the main stage for the second straight season while junior Willie Fox (130) makes his third appearance.

The trio is joined by first-timers, Paul Fox (112), Victor Olmos (119) and Nikko Villarreal (125) – all freshman – and junior Aaron Gonzalez (140).

Dominguez carried a No. 8 state ranking into the meet, Paul Fox is No. 6, Villarreal fifth, Willie Fox sixth and Kastl, fourth. Gonzalez and Olmos are not listed among the top-20 in their weight classes. Bakersfield High School, the defending champion, currently sits as the No. 1 team.
