A registered member of the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) as a 15-and-under fastpitch softball team, the Silicon Valley Glory thought its two days in Fremont would be spent vying for a 16U title at the Fall Brawl tournament over the weekend.
But when that age group was combined with the 18-and-under teams, the stakes were raised. The unexpected twist did little to throw off the Glory, who went on to win the championship.
The Glory posted a 1-2 record on Saturday and entered Sunday at the ninth seed out of 13 teams. The local team, which is made up of four 13 year olds, seven 14 year olds and one 15 year old, picked up four straight wins, including a 10-0 shutout against the Fremont Flyers in the championship game.
Pitchers Maria Sandoval and Alexis Conlon each pitched two games on Sunday and gave up a combined four runs. Pati Soria’s three triples Sunday paced the Glory offense.
“Our pitchers both pitched great on Sunday. I can’t say enough about how well they did,” coach Steve Ransom said. “The coaches couldn’t have asked for more from them or from the rest of the team. The ladies did all the little things right. Fantastic defense led by our shortstop Pati Soria, solid work behind the plate by Michaela Decker, and timely bunting and hitting along with great base running won the championship for us.”
Sunday’s finals: Glory 9, Tabu 2; Glory 8, Shockers 1; Glory 3, Lady Hawks 1; Glory 10, Fremont Flyers 0.
