Formula for fries

Closing in on the climax of garlic-mania at the Gilroy Garlic Fest, Christopher Ranch hosted a tour of its fields and processing plants in a tour organized by Bay Area McDonald’s Restaurants. Connecting where the source of their Gilroy Garlic Fries comes from, the four-hour tour lifted the veil from any questions one may have of growing and processing garlic. As it turns out, there's a lot to it.

First street gets smoother

A collective sigh of relief has been heard across Gilroy in response to the recent street paving up and down First Street—between Santa Teresa and the intersection of Monterey Road and Leavesley Avenue. As the road condition increasingly worsened over the last few years, locals and visitors began circumventing the bumpy, pothole-riddled street that is the main artery to grocery stores, retail, restaurants and many other services.

Fostering relationships

Eight Gilroy students traveled with the Gilroy Takko Student Exchange Program to Japan for a 10-day visit from June 26-July 5. Gabriela Avila, Luis Cruz Velasco, Rachael Gallagher and Louisa Mantilla represented Gilroy High School while Emmanuel Duran, Camryn Crowley, Isabel Mena and Natalie Roberts represented Christopher High School. After exploring Tokyo and outlying areas for two and a half days, the students and their chaparones, Marah Kuwada and Gretchen Yoder-Schrock, headed to Gilroy’s Sister City, Takko-Machi in the prefecture of Aomori.

Gilroy’s 1,326 special education students, whose needs range from weekly speech therapy to 24/7 residential schools, have a new leader in charge of their care in the wake of the resignation of the woman who had run the beleaguered department since 2013.

Training for bigger and better

Gavilan College women’s basketball announced the signing of four players to four-year universities. The playoff qualifying team did so thanks in no small part to the four players who helped solidify one of the stand out seasons for the Rams, but also helped to usher in a new group of freshmen who will take over the program next year as sophomores.
