Gilroy Police have arrested eight people since the start of this year’s “Avoid the 13” campaign, Sgt. Rick Sung of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.
Morgan Hill Police arrested 43 people for driving under the influence in the same time period, including three at a sobriety checkpoint Wednesday night.
At the checkpoint, located at Tennant Avenue and Caputo Drive, police impounded 12 cars because the drivers were unlicensed or had suspended licenses, Sgt. Jerry Neumayer said.
One man was arrested for possession of cocaine, he said.
Two people were arrested Christmas Eve, three Christmas Day and three more the day after Christmas. All these arrests were in the evening, Neumayer said. There were no DUI-related arrests Sunday, he said.
“It’s not that the Gilroy people aren’t doing their job or anything. They’d doing what they’re supposed to, but Morgan Hill had … a lot of different saturation patrols out there. MHPD, for its size, has gone over and beyond,” Sung said.
Morgan Hill Police Chief Bruce Cumming has noted his concern for the growing number of drunken drivers on local streets. Through September, officers arrested 168 people on suspicion of DUI this year. During the same period last year, 120 such arrests were made by local police.
The annual enhanced holiday drunken driving enforcement effort opened Friday, Dec. 18.
“Avoid the 13” efforts are intended to limit alcohol-related auto accidents that cause injury or death, Sung said.
