The Gilroy sub-varsity football teams split contests Oct. 7 at Everett Alvarez in Salinas.
The junior varsity team had another successful game with its defense keeping the Eagles out of the end zone during a 28-2 win that boosted the Mustangs’ record to 5-1. Steven Martinez scored on a 1-yard run after Gilroy had recovered a fumble deep in Alvarez territory. Dante Fullard scored on a 3-yard run, Martinez hooked up with Tony Travis on a 40-yard touchdown pass play, and Brandon Elam blocked a punt and ran it in for another score.
Alvarez won the freshman football game, 12-6. The Eagles scored the first two touchdowns of the game with Gilroy stopping the PAT attempts. Nico Sandoval scored the Mustangs’ touchdown.
The GHS freshmen traveled Thursday to Monterey and came out on the losing end of an 18-6 score. The Mustangs’ freshmen are now 2-4 on the season.
The junior varsity girls’ water polo team had a tough time at Salinas High, losing 9-1. Alex Marshall scored the Mustangs’ only goal.
“I think we did OK with the experience that we have,” said sophomore Kaitlin Muraoka.
The junior varsity volleyball team defeated Alisal High School 25-23, 25-18, using good teamwork and communication as keys to victory.
“We never put our heads down even when we lost points,” said sophomore Mariah Mastroieni.
The Mustangs played well in losing a hard-fought 25-15, 16-25, 15-12 decision to San Benito.
The freshman team also came close against the ‘Balers, dropping a 27-25, 25-16 decision.
Gilroy’s junior varsity field hockey team had mixed results. After tying Robert Louis Stevenson 1-1 Monday with Marissa McBride scoring the the Mustangs’ goal, GHS dropped a 2-0 decision Wednesday to Saratoga.
The Mustangs outscored Santa Catalina 8-0 Thursday. Deena Morsilli had two goals and two assists, and Nubia Daiz de Leon scored her first goal of the season.
