Gavilan College has been awarded $1.9 million to expand its nursing program and help address regional healthcare workforce needs. The funds were awarded through the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Rebuilding Nursing Infrastructure Grant, says a press release from Gavilan College.
The funding will support expansion of the nursing program by increasing the number of students admitted, providing additional clinical training opportunities and strengthening instructional resources to help prepare students to become registered nurses.
“This investment will benefit our students, our local hospitals and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Pedro Avila, Superintendent and President of Gavilan College. “Expanding this program means more local students can pursue rewarding healthcare careers without the burden of high tuition costs at private schools. We are proud to strengthen our role as a vital pipeline for the next generation of registered nurses serving our community.”
Nursing has been one of Gavilan College’s most in-demand programs for many years, college officials said. While interest in the program continues to grow, enrollment capacity has remained limited.
The funding will allow Gavilan College to expand enrollment while continuing to provide the instruction, clinical experience and hands-on training required for nursing education.
Demand for trained nurses remains high among hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and other healthcare providers throughout the region, the press release adds. The need for well-trained nurses who understand and are connected to the communities they serve continues to grow.
Gavilan College’s nursing program provides an affordable pathway for students pursuing meaningful and stable careers in healthcare.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students and for our community,” said Sana Massad, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health at Gavilan College. “Every additional seat means another student has the opportunity to become a nurse, and another future healthcare professional is being prepared to care for patients right here in our communities.”
With the $1.9 million investment, Gavilan College will continue building a stronger nursing workforce pipeline for South Santa Clara and San Benito counties, including Gilroy, Morgan Hill, San Martin, Hollister, San Juan Bautista and South San Jose, says the press release.
