– Gilroy high senior and Dispatch columnist Chris Morsilli took
first place in the Gilroy Rotary Club Speech Contest.
The contest was open to any student in grades 9 through 12 who
attend Gilroy High School, or are a resident of Gilroy and attend a
private high school.

Gilroy – Gilroy high senior and Dispatch columnist Chris Morsilli took first place in the Gilroy Rotary Club Speech Contest.
The contest was open to any student in grades 9 through 12 who attend Gilroy High School, or are a resident of Gilroy and attend a private high school. The area level contest includes the winning contestants from Morgan Hill, Hollister, Salinas and San Juan Bautista. Winning contestants will then advance to the regional level, which includes 57 Rotary clubs from Alameda, San Benito, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. For the purpose of this competition, the district is divided into two regions.
The top speakers from each Regional level contest will go the final competition at the district conference being held at the Santa Clara Marriott April 30. The purpose of the contest is to increase personal knowledge and awareness of the importance of being able to speak effectively before a group, increase public knowledge of what Rotary is and does throughout the community and the world.
Other finalists were: second place, Carly Kennedy, a GHS junior; third place, Emelie Castillo, a GHS senior; and fourth place, Jiana Escabar, a GHS senior.
Kids Discover art today at Solorsano school
Gilroy – The 2006 Kids Discover Arts event will be held Saturday, March 18, from 10am to 3pm at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, located at 7121 Grenache Way.
More than 20 local artisans will conduct “hands-on” arts workshops and activities for children ages 5 to 11. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free and children are encouraged to wear paint friendly clothing.

St. Patrick’s dinner benefits needy and homeless
Gilroy – St. Joseph’s Family Center is hosting a St. Patrick’s Dinner Saturday, March 18. All proceeds from the event will benefit the families in need and the homeless in the Gilroy community.
The dinner will be held at St. Mary Auditorium, 11 First St. Doors open at 6pm and dinner will begin at 7pm. Tickets are $25 per person or $200 per table (seating 8). Tickets are available at St. Joseph’s Family Center, 7950 Church St., Ste. A.

Operation Interdependence pack-in set for today
Gilroy – Please Join us Saturday, March 18, from 1 to 3pm at 8075 Camino Arroyo Gilroy (behind the old Wal-Mart in Gilroy).
The group will be creating about 5,000 civilian rations, baggies with goodies and notes from home to ship out to the deployed men and women serving overseas in the armed forces.

AAUW celebrates 40 years of service Thursday
Gilroy – The Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women is celebrating its 40th year. South Valley Symphony benefit concert set for tonight
Morgan Hill – The South Valley Symphony is sponsoring a benefit concert entitled Musical Madness to be presented at the new Ann Sobrato High School Theater located on Burnett Drive in Morgan Hill today, at 7:30pm.
The concert will feature several local musicians and musical groups performing a variety of styles ranging from flamenco guitar to jazz ragtime and dixieland. The star-studded lineup of performers includes Beverly Olivier-Blount, Jack and Chris Bradshaw, John Garcia, Sandra Marlowe, Albert and Anthony Marques, Dave Porcella, and the Sine Noveine Woodwind Quintet and others.
Tickets are priced at $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 55 and older and $8 for students ages 12 to 18.
