3 CHEERS:
For the Gilroy High School wrestling squad, always good but now
a prep sports dynasty in progress. The early news from the state
championships is all good. GHS is on track for an amazing
finish
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For the City Council members, who seem willing to craft more stringent campaign donation laws to govern city politics. The Council could do a great service to the people by amending the current process. As importantly, the Gilroy City Council could set a standard that other local agencies – from the Gilroy Unified School District Board to the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board – should be willing to adopt.

JEERS: For Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage, who held all the cards in the vote to put a half-cent sales tax before county voters. No specific projects. No completion dates. No strings attached. No reason to vote yes. The only good news is that the money would be in the hands of supervisors as opposed to the Valley Transportation Authority. But the truth is, the tax will last far longer than Gage’s tenure on the board, and South County needs will likely be shoved to the back of the bus once again.

CHEERS: For the scrutiny the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees is giving to the block schedule at Gilroy High School. It isn’t working; it needs immediate attention and revision. And it absolutely should be done before school begins in the fall. Trustees have done the right things to this point. They are the ultimate advocates for our students. Listen to them, listen to the parents and make sure those in leadership positions make the necessary adjustments happen.

JEERS: For the attack on a 68-year-old Gilroy cab driver. The passenger attacked from behind and beat the cabbie about the face. What a tough guy, beating up an older gentleman with a surprise attack from behind? Don’t forget, if you know anything about this incident, call the Gilroy Police Department at 846-0350.

CHEERS: For the news that the Quail Canyon Inn will be re-built. The popular hangout for weekend motorcycle riders will rise again on the bluffs above Chesbro Reservoir. Owners say they’re planning a Christmas opening. If that ends up happening, the Quail would be a great stop for a Christmas toy drive.

JEERS: For the “in like a lion” start to March. Rain, rain, snow on the hilltops, more rain. Enjoy Saturday because the rain is supposed to return for another long stretch beginning on Sunday. Maybe we’ll get the “out like a lamb” March a bit earlier than normal.

CHEERS: For the continued push to build a new road connecting Highway 152 from the Don Pacheco Y to U.S. 101. That stretch is the region’s most crying need, both in terms of safety and horrendous traffic jams.
