County creates new e-waste policy
San Jose – Santa Clara County Supervisors have approved a new policy for the handling and disposal of e-waste. The policy creates standards for the purchase, management and disposal of equipment such as computers, fax machines, printers and telephone equipment, helping to minimize the environmental impact. The new policy will be incorporated into how the county does business with its vendors. The policy criteria will be written into the county’s request for proposals, requiring contract bidders to address “take back” of electronic equipment for reuse, recycling and/or disposal. The county will encourage a “reuse” of equipment that is in good repair, a strategy that provides those products to groups such as schools or nonprofits.
County deficit continues to climb
San Jose – Santa Clara County’s budget deficit continues to grow. The projected shortfall for the year that begins July is $120.6 million, up from an earlier estimate of $111.4 million. County Executive Pete Kutras said the deficit will fluctuate as the new fiscal year approaches.
“We continue to experience the impact of the longest sustained recession in our county’s history,” Kutras said. “Despite substantial reductions in spending, we’re facing deficits in the coming year and for the foreseeable future.”
Supervisors actually agreed to raise the deficit Tuesday, voting to restore $4.6 million in tax revenues to the cites of Los Altos Hills, Monte Sereno, Cupertino and Saratoga.
