Gilroy – Applications are now available for the Rudy Melone Memorial Scholarship, funded by the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. Dr. Melone was a former President of Gavilan College and it was his vision that helped create the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The Dr. Rudy Melone Memorial Scholarship honors outstanding students in academic achievement, community service, and the nurturing of future leaders of the Garlic Festival Association and our community.
The Rudy Melone Memorial Scholarship is open to current graduates of Gilroy Unified School District high schools and current graduates transferring from Gavilan College who have academic merit, community involvement, has applied to an accredited four-year college or university, has performed volunteer work at the Gilroy Garlic festival, and who have financial need to obtain a college degree. Up to $5,000 in scholarships per year are awarded to students from Gilroy Unified School District high schools and from Gavilan College.
Applications are available from the school’s financial aid office. Deadlines to submit completed application packages are March 2, for Gavilan College graduates and March 15, for GUSD high schools graduates.
A voice for animals essay contest
Gilroy – High school students are invited to enter the Humane Education Network’s 16th annual essay contest. Students must submit a double-spaced, 1,000-word manuscript that examines either the mistreatment of one animal species or a cause of animal suffering and possible measures to reduce it. We are looking for in-depth analysis and original thought in addressing these issues as they concern practices in the U.S.
First prize is $500, second $250, third $100. Deadline for submissions of entries is today. Results will be announced May 31.

Dual immersion meetings
Gilroy – Dual Language Immersion Program informational meetings will be held in English today from 9 to 10am or 6 to 7pm. Meetings in Spanish will be held today from 7 to 8pm, or Friday from 9 to 10am. Meetings take place at Las Animas School, 8450 Wren Ave., Room 8.

Community Advisory Committee meeting
Gilroy – On Thursday, March 9, the CAC will hold its advisory meeting at 7pm at Gilroy Unified School District office, 7819 Arroyo Circle. CAC is a group of parents, teachers and administrators who works with children of special needs. The topic is Positive Behavior Support Plans.
