Cuts or no cuts?

CALLER 1: I’m calling in regards to the no-cut policy that you have in the article on the Green Phone last week. And I just wanted to say I was wondering how it was in effect at Gilroy High because apparently no one told that to the countless students who were cut from the volleyball, field hockey, cheerleading, water polo and all the other sports they tried out for. It seems like only the privileged few, namely the Gilroy High football team that it applies to.

Nowhere in the Gilroy High School athletic guide does it state there is a no-cut policy, only that students can be cut from the team during the tryout period and then it’s only for size limitation. So I guess that doesn’t hold true. either because look at the size of the freshman team. Over half of them might be standing around, but at least they are on the team. So what is it, cut or no-cut? I’m sure that all the students who were cut from the other sports would love to come back to join the the teams they tried out for and put all their efforts into.

GREEN PHONE: In one sense, you’re right. GHS has an unwritten no-cut policy in place for football and cuts from other teams. After speaking with GHS athletic director Jack Daley and freshman coach Tim Lemos, we learned that this is so that those who want the experience of wearing the Mustangs uniform on the football field can do so. Why isn’t this the case in other sports? Because many other sports are limited as to how many participants are involved at one time. Lemos suggests that any interested parent is welcome to attend practices for a week. He believes that then you will know why certain individuals play more than others

CALLER 2: I’m aware of your reporting constraints due to lack of reporters and available paper space. But I am pleased with the coverage of all sports from freshmen to junior varsity to varsity to adult softball and Pop Warner. I would like to turn the spotlight on this year’s junior varsity football team. Last year as freshmen they were 9-1 and thus far carry a record of 6-1 with three big games left. I really look forward to seeing this team at the varsity level. For now, the inside scoop is that Josh Hernandez has been called up to join the varsity line. I think we need to keep an eye on him.

GREEN PHONE: First, thanks for your recognition of the constraints that all small newspapers face. Yes, we will continue to keep an eye on the junior varsity football team, which has followed up the success of the freshman team one year earlier. Look for reports on the JV football team on a small scale at the bottom of the varsity games and at the lead for our junior varsity roundups that run weekly. And, Jeff Smith, who was also recently elevated to the varsity team.
