Tool for protecting watersheds
Washington – The United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Water has published a guide to watershed management as a tool in developing and implementing watershed plans. The draft Handbook for Developing Watershed Plans to Restore and Protect Our Waters is aimed toward communities, watershed groups, and local, state, tribal, and federal environmental agencies.
“This handbook will help anyone undertaking a watershed planning effort, but it should be particularly useful to persons working with impaired or threatened waters,” said EPA Assistant Administrator for Water Benjamin H. Grumbles.
EPA is making this draft document widely available with the purpose of having it used and tested by a variety of watershed partnerships, whose advice will be considered in developing the final version.
Address comments to wa***************@*pa.gov no later than June 30.

Phares secures endorsements
Watsonville – Ana Ventura Phares gained significant momentum in her race for Assembly today by earning endorsements from three more Assemblymembers and two local officials from the 28th Assembly district. Assemblymembers Jenny Oropeza, Jackie Goldberg, Cindy Montanez, Greenfield Mayor John Huerta and Soledad Councilwoman Stefanie De La Rosa cited Ventura Phares’ deep roots in the district and ability to get things done as the reasons behind their support.
Ventura Phares, a former migrant student, was raised in the Salinas and Pajaro valleys and her father worked in local produce companies for over 40 years. After graduating from law school, Ventura Phares was an attorney for California Rural Legal Assistance in Salinas and later worked on promoting non-discrimination and diversity as Santa Cruz County’s Equal Employment Opportunity Officer. She has served on the Watsonville City Council for seven years, is the former mayor and is serving her last year of service to the residents of Watsonville.
Ventura Phares is a candidate for the State Assembly to replace Assemblymember Simon Salinas, who is termed out in 2006. Assembly District 28 covers Watsonville, Salinas, Hollister, Gilroy, and portions of San Jose.
