No action taken in closed session by the Gavilan Joint Community
College District board
Gilroy – Whether Gavilan Golf Course will be sold to developers or filled with student and faculty housing is still on the negotiating table.
The Gavilan Joint Community College District board discussed the future of the school’s 37-acre golf course during closed session at Tuesday’s meeting but no action was taken, said Gavilan College Spokeswoman Jan Bernstein-Chargin.
During closed session Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella was negotiating the price and terms of the sale with various developers, according to the college’s agenda.
Since the golf course’s lease on the property ends in October 2007, college officials began in March exploring the possibility of developing the greens with student, faculty or senior citizen housing. Gavilan Golf Course, a nine-hole course located on the southwest edge of campus, generates about $35,000 annually for the college.
About 450 golfers play on the course every week but the Gavilan College men’s golf team uses Eagle Ridge. College officials expect the developed land to pull in more revenue than the golf course. In September, Kinsella reported that consultants have already been paid $35,000 to assess economical and geographical conditions.
At the time the college president said it could be another year before the consultants finish their work and that he expects their total cost to run about $500,000.
