In today’s day and age of diet crazes and tabloid-thin bodies, it’s good to know that the belly still has an important roll in something. Many people try to generate their clubhead speed with their arms. But even though the arms are connected to the club, the swing’s power is generated by the hips and mid section as they move through the hitting area.
At the top of your backswing, your hips should be coiled slightly so your belly points behind the ball. As you begin a slight slide towards the target both knees should remain bent and stay the same distance apart the entire time. After you slide a few inches toward the target, the belly should swing open (to the left, for a right-handed swing) as the club strikes the ball. This move helps generate clubhead speed, in addition to ensuring that momentum carries your weight onto your front foot after impact. If your belly is facing anywhere other than toward the target when you complete your swing, then you didn’t really give the swing all of your power.
