Gilroy Foundation’s 25th Anniversary champagne reception Nov. 17 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course Clubhouse brought out a multitude of South County do-gooders. I mean that in a good way.
The do-gooding do-gooders enjoyed champagne provided by Guglielmo Winery (good bubbles) and updates on the more than $2 million in endowment funds the foundation has raised during its 25-year tenure.
Attending the event was the first president of the foundation and the man who brought the organization to life, Bill Ayer, and his wife, Marlene Ayer. The event was a who’s who of Gilroy family names including the Christophers, Filices, Habings, Martins, Derrys, Goldsmiths, Saccos, Wells and even a few clergy members, including Gilroy Presbyterian Pastor Bruce Rowlison.
Arlene Silva, consummate supporter of the arts, showed her support for the foundation mission. Happy anniversary Gilroy Foundation, and keep up the do-gooding!
Alex Kennett, an active member of the South County Democratic Club, is an obedient patient of Kaiser family practitioner and newly elected Gilroy City Council member Peter Arellano. Following doctor’s orders to celebrate recovery from recent back surgery, Kennett threw a party.
Now, some of you who were involved with this party are saying I’m making this up, but I reserve the right to take wide artistic license to make a good story – so play along. The idea really sprang from the mind of the first lady of classy parties herself, Yarka Kennett.
The Kennetts’ beautiful country home hosted more than 80 guests on Saturday night including fellow belly dancer Mitsi Smith, South County Democratic Club president Mark Moore and his wife, Joanne Moore.
Peter Connelly, fresh from the Emerald Isle and a new Morgan Hill resident, shared stories of sailing and growing up Irish in pubs, wearing wet wool sweaters and smelling like sheep whilst his lovely wife nibbled on croissants in her native France. I’m not making up this part.
The evening moved from beer and sheep to wine and a good fudge recipe from sweet-tooth aficionado and dental hygienist Stephanie Short. Stephanie is the one with the well-flossed teeth. The following recipe goes well with red wine.
Toffee-Chip Fudge
1 1/2 packages milk chocolate chips (the good stuff)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Step 1: Heat in microwave 1 minute.
Step 2: Add 1 tsp. vanilla and heat another 30 seconds then stir.
Step 3: Add 1 package Score toffee chips (or Heath Bar chips)
Step 4: Spread on waxed paper lining a 9-inch-by-9-inch pan.
Step 5: Cool, cut into squares and indulge!
I’m sure this goes well with coffee, so you may want to take some with you to Sue’s Coffee Roasting Co. this Friday night for their first jam session. The shop is located in Gilroy on the corner of Monterey and Fifth streets (bring an instrument). This is your chance to escape the relatives.
Ciao for now.
