Radio-controlled airplanes take to the sky above Coyote

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … Snoopy’s doghouse?

Yes, expect to see Snoopy’s doghouse take on the Red Baron among many other fantastic aeronautical feats at this weekend’s Santa Clara County Model Aircraft Skypark airshow.

The free show features many different kinds of remote controlled aircraft, including helicopters, turbine jets, racing planes and more.

“This is our 18th year of doing the airshow and trying to get the public interested in radio-controlled and model planes,” said Chris Luvara, a spokesman for the airshow. “People will see just about any kind of model aircraft imaginable all in one place.”

Show participants will also make witches, stop signs and cars fly for the audience’s viewing pleasure.

One of the show’s highlights are the model jets, which Luvara said look, sound and even smell like real jets. The radio-controlled jets can range from $5,000 up. But getting involved in radio-controlled airplanes doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Basic models start around $350 to $400, Luvara said.

During the show’s lunch break, trainer airplanes will be available for children to try their hand at radio-controlled flying.

The show goes from 9am to 3:30pm today and tomorrow at the skypark, located at 10250 Monterey Road in Morgan Hill. For more information, including directions, call (408) 292-1212 or visit www.sccmas.org/airshow.
