A local band is playing old favorites for a good cause this Saturday at Fortino Winery. “Cold Storage” is a cool blast from the past, covering great music from early rock ‘n’ roll to doo-wop to the early British Invasion. The band has been together about a year, but its members have been in various bands since this music was topping the charts. If you’ve been wondering, “What ever happened to all those cool tunes I grew up with?” Well, they’ve been in Cold Storage!

Members of the band include “Groovy” Gus Gatto on vocals and rhythm guitar, Johnny “Fingers” Darsey on lead guitar and vocals, George Carson on keyboards and vocals, Mark Cvitkovich on bass and vocals, and Dennis “Back Beat” Brooks on drums and vocals.

They’ll be performing songs such as, “Teenager In Love,” “This Boy” (Beatles), “Sherry” (4 Seasons), “Donna Donna” (Dion), “Slow Down” (Larry Williams), and “Bristol Stomp” (Dovells), as well as old favorites such as “Under the Boardwalk,” “Secret Agent Man,” “Twist and Shout,” and “Mustang Sally.”

Johnny “Fingers” Darsey explained, “We agreed to perform at this American Cancer Society benefit after we heard about Jill Fortino’s team of Fortino Winery Cancer Stompers who are raising money for the Relay For Life. We all have family members who have been touched by cancer – who doesn’t, these days? We all agreed it would be an opportunity to help raise money for a good cause.”

The event will feature live music, refreshments, wine by the glass, barbecue lunch, boutique items, and face painting for the kids from noon to 5pm. Call 842-3305 for more information.

Local musician Sandra Marlowe invites everyone to a street dance: “Hi, friends, help usher in Morgan Hill’s Mushroom Mardi Gras and Memorial Day weekend with the South Bay Swing Band this coming Friday evening, May 26. We’re sharing the bill with the Sobrato High School Jazz Band for a good old-fashioned street dance from 7 to 9pm at 3rd and Monterey streets in Morgan Hill. Be part of the swingin’, singin’, dishin’ festivities!” (It’s BYOC, which means you might want to bring along a lawn chair if you’re more a listener, than a dancer).

Down at the Methodist Church this week, Marge Wentworth won the hat contest at the Mother/Daughter Spring luncheon in a hat and dress she bought in 1948 – she said she remembers the date because that’s the year her daughter was born.

Longtime housepainter Judy Marez finally took a much-needed vacation. Just back from her greyhound trip to Las Vegas where she held hands with Frankie Valli, she found just enough time to whip up a Watergate salad for the luncheon. The fluffy concoction included pineapple, nuts, whipped cream, and some other mysterious ingredients – it was a delicious hit.

When they called on friends at a dinner party on Alexander Street Friday night, Rosalie and Eric brought the most beautiful bouquet of calla lilies anyone’s seen this season, grown right in their own garden in the heart of Gilroy.

Over at the high school this week, the kids have been doing a fine job of performing “Our Town.” It’s a story set in the small town of Grover’s Corners, but folks noticed it seemed to have a few things in common with – well – our town. Some of the young people in the audience couldn’t help but chuckle when they saw their friends all gussied up in 1901 attire, but they were there being supportive and cheering them on when it really counted.

That’s the news from Gilroy, where all the women are multi-tasking, all the men are working overtime, and most of the children know more about computers than their parents do.
