What will happen?

“I would like to know what is planned for the Father’s Day Antique Show, and the Garlic City Fun Run this year, since Monterey Street will still be under construction at the time these events are normally held. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

Great question, caller. The Red Phone passed your concern along to the City Editor who thought it worthy of a story. Check out page A3 in today’s edition to find out everything you need to know about downtown events.

Where’s that sign?

“I’d like to know what happened to the Welcome to Gilroy sign when you enter on Leavesley. It’s been there for years. I know someone crashed into it or something and it was fixed, but now it’s gone. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

It contacted the city about this and was referred to Caltrans. Repeated calls to Caltrans have not yet been returned. Keep an eye on its column and should the Red Phone have any luck in the near future, it will give you an update.

Comments about letters

“Hi, I am absolutely thrilled with the two letters in the Friday, May 5, paper from Cherri Marshall (Council Changed the Rules for ‘Spoiled’ Residents of Eagle Ridge) and Lisabeth A. Gifford (There’s No Defense for Illegal Immigration). … Sherry has had two letters in two different papers this week and they both have been great. Thank you very much and keep up the good work.

– “Good morning, I just wish to respond to Cherri Marshall’s letter (Illegal Immigrants are Just That – Illegal – and Do Not Enjoy the Rights of Citizens) in Thursday, May 4, paper. Hallelujah Cherri! The only thing I’d like to add is that I’m really tired of the ‘poor me’ syndrome that we have in Gilroy from the illegal people coming from Mexico. None of the people from foreign lands come to the U.S. and whine quite as much. They move on with their lives. The Vietnamese, the Indians, the Filipinos, the Europeans, they all come here, mostly legal, and they get busy. They get an education, learn English, add to communities by opening businesses. Look at San Jose on Story Road, that’s a wonderful community. Illegal immigrants from ANY country are a liability to the U.S., definitely not an asset. Legal immigrants have become an asset. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Thanks, callers, for taking a moment to let the Dispatch staff and the community know what you think.

Rumbling cycles

“Does the police department keep an eye on people riding around on motorcycles with those God-awful loud mufflers? I know now that the weather is really nice and warm, the bikers are bound to be out and about and those loud bikes drive me nuts. Is that something they ticket?”

Red Phone:

Not too long ago, the Red Phone checked into this for another caller concerned about the noise.

Gilroy Police Sgt. Kurt Svardal said it is against the law for individuals to alter mufflers to make them louder than they were originally manufactured.

“We do enforce muffler violations,” Svardal said. “We write tickets for them, just as we do kids with stereos. And it’s not just kids with stereos, it’s adults. We are equal opportunity enforcers.”

To report excessive noise, call 846-0350.
