In the four-way race for Santa Clara County District Attorney, two candidates have emerged at the top: Superior Court Judge Delores Carr and Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Sinunu.

Both women outshine their competitors, Deputy District Attorney Jim Shore and Assistant District Attorney Marc Buller. Regarding South County’s interests specifically, Carr and Sinunu clearly have been the most active district attorney candidates to seek support. That speaks volumes about their awareness of the issues facing our community.

Both women have outstanding credentials. Sinunu has the endorsement of her boss, outgoing District Attorney George Kennedy, as well as a focus on violent offenders and an emphasis on fairness. Carr has the endorsement of District One County Supervisor Don Gage and a host of county police officer associations, and promises a collaborative approach and to use her unique experience as a judge.

If you’d like to learn more about Sinunu, Carr, Shore or Buller, all four candidates will be at a Candidate’s Night sponsored by the South County Collaborative on May 16 at Gavilan College. If you’re undecided, come to the college’s television studio and listen to what they have to say.

If no candidate in this four-way race earns a simple majority – 50 percent plus one – in the June primary, then a run-off between the top two vote-getters will be held in November’s general election.

As long as those two candidates are Carr and Sinunu,

we think that’s a good thing for

Santa Clara County in general and

South County in particular.

A run-off will give voters more time to study the candidates and examine their positions in a race that is often overshadowed by candidates for offices with more marquee appeal.

But when it comes to your safety – and that’s an important component of quality of life – who serves as District Attorney has a lot more impact than who is elected to any number of statewide offices.

We’re rooting for a Sinunu-Carr runoff in the November election.
