Workshop for homebuyers

Gilroy – First-time homebuyers can get up to $50,000 in low, deferred-interest loans from the city. Low and moderate income families can learn more by attending a Homebuyer Assistance workshop at 6pm Wednesday, in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St.

Annual Spring Concerts

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Choirs will be presenting their annual Spring Concerts Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday’s concert will be held at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave. at 7:30pm. Thursday’s concert will be held in the San Juan Mission at 7:30pm. Admission is $3 at the door.

The performing groups will include the 40-member Concert Choir, the 70-member Women’s Chorus, 50-member Men’s Chorus, the 24-member Concerto Delle Donne and auditioned Women’s ensemble, and the Chamber Singers. Both the Chamber Singers and Concerto Delle Donne just returned from participation in the Heritage Festival in Anaheim, where the ensembles both received Gold ratings, Chamber Singers placed second and Concerto Delle Donne third.

The Chamber Singers will be participating in the Golden State Competition on May 16.

Earth Day Festival Saturday

Gilroy – An Earth Day festival featuring tree planting, food and a number of activities for families will take place Saturday, April 29 from 10am to 2pm at Christmas Hill Park. The event will include birdhouse building demonstrations and live animals. Anyone interested in carting off free compost or wood chips should bring a shovel and container.

Garlic Festival Queen Pageant Saturday

Gilroy – Eight young ladies will compete for the Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen title during the 28th annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant scheduled for Saturday, April 29, at 7pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant is a scholarship pageant. Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent, and evening gown.

Tickets for the pageant will be available at the festival office, 7473 Monterey St. or at the theater that night. The ticket price is $10.

Wind symphony performs

Gilroy – On Sunday, April 30, at 2pm the Morgan Hill Wind Symphony presents, “A Young Person’s Guide to the Band” concert with selections that will bring out the youth in all of us at the Gilroy High School Auditorium, 750 W. 10th St. Admission: contributions welcome.
