Gilroy’s field hockey team has been good enough over the past few seasons that it is not happy with “moral victories.”
However, the Mustangs bounced back from Monday’s resounding defeat at Archbishop Mitty by playing another one of the region powerhouses tough before falling to St. Francis 1-0.
After a scoreless first half that featured some acrobatic saves by Caitlyln Peiroti, St. Francis got a second-half goal.
Kelly Perkins received player of the game honors for GHS, which is 1-2-1.
“Our fitness is improving,” coach Adam Gemar said. “We’re strong for most of the game. Now we need our positioning, passing and supporting category to come together.”
The Mustangs host Carmel at 5:15pm Wednesday.

Club Brazil, FC United and Joanna were all winners in the first week of the Latinos Program Indoor Soccer Tournament at Gilroy High School. It is the sixth year of the program.
In Group B, Club Brazil defeated TSS 7-3. In other action, the Eagles and Puma fought to a 2-2 tie. In Group D, FC United blanked Thunder Katz 5-0 and Joanna beat Staff Infection 5-3.
The fall season lasts eight weeks with 16 teams involving both students and teachers. The intramural program is a creation of the student body and led by officers of the Latinos Program.
