Free family movie night in downtown Gilroy

Gilroy – Bring chairs and a popcorn bowl and come downtown for movie night. The movies start at 7pm and will be shown in the parking lot of Eigleberry Street between Fourth and Fifth streets.

This week’s movie is “Mary Poppins,” starring Julie Andrews. Popcorn is free. The last movie night is next Wednesday.

Give stuff a second chance

Gilroy – Give stuff a second chance and help the environment during Second Chance Week

n Today is Donate Coats for Kids and Adults Day – bring them to Gilroy or Morgan Hill city hall.

n Thursday is Supply Schools with Supplies Day; bring supplies to city hall at either city.

n Friday is Second Sight Day – donate old eyeglasses at either city hall.

n Saturday is Keep Your Gear in Play Day, a great time to donate sports equipment to either city hall for redistribution.

Help name Las Animas

Gilroy – The Las Animas Renaming Committee is staging a meeting at 7pm Thursday, at the district office, 7810 Arroyo Circle. Community members may bring name ideas for the new elementary school. The school, which will replace Las Animas Elementary School, will be located in southern Gilroy.

Food writer speaks

Gilroy –The Gilroy Writing Project hosts a talk by noted food writer, Barbara Santos, who also serves as the marketing director for the San Francisco Writers Conference. Fall STAR’s youth program

Gilroy – The Gavilan STAR Program is now accepting registration for Fall STAR 2006. Saturday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9am to 12pm, cost $99. Fall STAR is a Saturday morning acting workshop for students ages 8 to 16.

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of theatre and participate in writing and rehearsing Halloween themed skits. Fall STAR ends with a final performance in the Gav TV studio.

Audition for SVCT’s ‘Treasure Island’

Gilroy – Thursday Sept. 21 at 6pm and Saturday Sept. 23 at 9am and 1pm. Arrive 30 minutes early to register. Auditions will be held at the SVCT warehouse, 8565 Monterey Road, behind Kelly-Moore Paint.

Roles: Children in grades 2 to 8 and for adult male baritones. Be prepared to sing a song and bring your own sheet music; an accompanist will be provided.
