Portuguese Hall vandalized
GILROY – A recent break-in at a popular meeting place for the city’s Portuguese community – including Mayor Al Pinheiro – was mild as burglaries go.
Nothing was reported stolen from the IFDES building, commonly known as Portuguese Hall, at 250 Old Gilroy St. IFDES stands for Irmandade da Festa do Divino Espirito Santo – in English, Holy Ghost Celebration Society.
It looked as though theft was the intent of the burglar(s), however. The building was ransacked, and the hall’s safe – which was empty – was forced open, Gilroy police said.
The burglar(s) forced open a window and doors at the hall sometime between 2 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to Gilroy police.
“I’ve been part of the hall for 30-some-odd years, and this is probably the second or third time it’s been broken into,” Pinheiro said. “There’s not a whole lot to steal there.”
